Kiswahili in African language lists

The African Union includes Kiswahili in its official-language list: “Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Kiswahili and any other African language.” The East African Community lists “English, Kiswahili, French” as official languages.

Kenya’s constitution names Kiswahili and English as official languages. SADC’s Secretariat newsletter records the Summit’s adoption of Kiswahili as a fourth official working language in 2019. In Baian, attendees find this audience language under the label Swahili.

Swahili opens a localised text view

Selecting Swahili opens the written translation directly, with phone screens in Swahili. Attendees read the programme; it is text only, and there is no listen-or-read choice.

Swahili can still be spoken on stage

A speaker using Swahili can be translated into other supported audience languages. The Swahili audience receives text, so explain the reading format to guests who would usually expect to follow through headphones.
